How to Tell Your Therapist the Truth – Even the Weird Stuff (Especially the Weird Stuff)

Tell Your Therapist the Truth – Even the Weird Stuff (Especially the Weird Stuff)

Therapy can feel like a high-stakes game sometimes. You sit down, heart racing, palms sweaty, thinking:

– Do I say this?
– Do I say that?
– Will they judge me?
… and then you catch yourself censoring, like a beep button on the radio. Maybe because you’re embarrassed, maybe because you’re scared, or maybe because it just feels too “weird.”

Here’s the thing: the weird stuff matters. The stuff that feels shameful, confusing, or downright bizarre is often the stuff that’s holding you back. Those thoughts, impulses, and experiences aren’t random – they’re signals. They’re clues about your fears, your unmet needs, and your inner conflicts.

Imagine going to a doctor and leaving out a symptom because it’s “weird” or “embarrassing.” You wouldn’t do that, right? You’d want a full picture so you could actually get better!

Therapy is the same. Your therapist can’t help you untangle what you haven’t shared. And the more honest you are, the faster the healing, the insight, and the growth.

So how do you start telling the “weird stuff”?

1. Name the fear: Say out loud, “This feels embarrassing to tell, but…” Acknowledging the discomfort often makes it easier to say the words.
2. Start small: You don’t have to spill everything in one session. Even one weird thought or behaviour is enough to open the door.
3. Trust the process: Therapists are trained to listen without judgment. What feels shocking or shameful to you usually isn’t shocking to them.
4. Notice the relief: After you share, pay attention to the tiny shift, less pressure, less secrecy, maybe even a little self-compassion sneaking in.

Remember: therapy is a safe place for your full truth. That weird thought, that awkward feeling, that impulse you hide, it’s not too much. It’s exactly what you need to say to move forward. So next session, give yourself permission to tell the truth!
